The Kerala producers, distributors and Federation of theatres (theatres in existing release stations) have come into an agreement that new releases henceforth can release with as many prints as possible. This means smaller stations in B & C centers too can release new films.

The issue was boiling over for the last few months as theatres in smaller stations were fighting a battle against the restrictive trade measures carried out by big station theatres. For example Ernakulam theatre owners all these years were not allowing new releases in Aluva, Tripunithara and North Paravoor, which have now become like suburbs of Ernakulam.

The Federation theatres lamented that producers and distributors milked them by getting huge advances, and if the release was allowed in more nearby stations it will eat into their collections. They will not be able to recover the amount they paid as advances. Now as per the new regulation, main centers will pay only limited advance.

The distributors have found a new revenue stream from B & C theatres, by asking for a Minimum Guarantee (MG) amount from them. Last weeks big release Mulla was released in Tripunithara and Aluva, on MG basis.

This new system augers well for the industry as they can release in any number of stations, ensuring a better opening for a film. It will ensure faster return on investments and audiences in small towns will be tempted to see a release film, creating an all new viewers for Malayalam films.
